Question and Answer

Can I enroll in Medicare if I only worked a few years?

Question:
I will be turning 65 soon but I have only worked a few years. My husband, who has worked more than 10 years, is only 60. Can I still enroll in Medicare?

Answer:
You can enroll in Medicare now. However, if you have worked fewer than 10 years (or 40 quarters) you will have to pay a monthly Medicare Part A premium until your husband become eligible for Social Security benefits (as early as 62 or if he develops a disability). You will also have to pay the standard Part B premium.
