What to do if your HMO doctor refuses to provide you care or refuses to refer you to a specialist

You have four options:

  1. You can ask the doctor to reconsider his/her decision.
  2. You can switch to another doctor in your HMO's network; a different doctor might give you the care you need or refer you to a specialist.
  1. You can request your HMO to approve the care.  If the HMO refuses, you can appeal the HMO's denial of services.
  1. At certain times during the year, you can disenroll from your Medicare HMO by either informing Social Security or your HMO in writing that you want to return to Original Medicare or joining another HMO.
