What can I do if a skilled nursing facility will not take me as a patient?Question 2 of 6 (use "Last" or "Next" buttons to see more) Last Update: March 29, 2011
If the skilled nursing facility (SNF) refuses to take you as a patient, you will have to call around to find another Medicare-certified SNF. It is possible that another SNF would be able to give you the services you need.
Hospital discharge planners are required to keep lists of Medicare-participating SNFs so if you are being discharged from the hospital, you can ask for this list.
If you are in a Medicare private health plan, you may be able to call your plan to get a list of SNFs that are within your plan’s network.
You can also call your local State Health Insurance Assistance Program or the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 for referrals to other care options in your area.
If you cannot find a SNF in your area able to take you, talk with your doctor about other care options that may be available to you in your area.
If you live in a rural area, you may be able to get SNF coverage in a hospital if the hospital has fewer than 100 beds and these beds can be used as either SNF beds or hospital beds depending on patient needs.
