Why should I bother to question Medicare or my insurance company—isn't appealing a waste of time?

Not at all. You have the right to appeal any health care decision made by Medicare, your doctor, hospital or a Medicare private health plan—and you have a good chance of winning. In fact, most appeals turn out in favor of the person appealing. Remember, you don't have to take no for an answer.
