There are many products available to help people with physical limitations continue to live independently. While assistive devices and home modifications are generally not covered by Medicare, there are organizations that can point you to low-cost products and services:

  • ABLEDATA is a federally funded database of assistive technology products and rehabilitation equipment.
  • Each state has an Assistive Technology Program that helps residents with disabilities, their family members and caregivers identify and get the equipment they need.
  • The National Rehabilitation Information Center offers information on organizations and agencies that can help people with disabilities.
  • AARP’s website has helpful home-design suggestions for people with disabilities.
