As a general rule, an outpatient hospital service is any type of medical or surgical care performed at a hospital that your doctor does not expect will be an overnight hospital stay. In some cases, you may stay overnight in the hospital, but not be admitted as an inpatient (this would be considered outpatient service). These include:

  • blood transfusions
  • hospital billed laboratory tests
  • mental health care
  • medical supplies such as splints and casts
  • emergency room or outpatient clinic services, including same day surgery
  • certain drugs
  • x-rays and other radiation services
