A premium penalty is an amount that you must pay to Medicare in addition to the regular monthly premium for late enrollment in Part B or Part D. The Part B premium is an additional 10 percent of the premium for each year you delay enrollment that you did not have coverage from a current employer. Part D will have a premium penalty of at least 1 percent for every month you delay enrollment that you were without creditable coverage.
