Social Security credits are the unit of measurement that determines when you are eligible to receive Social Security benefits, including retirement benefits and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). You earn Social Security credits when you work and pay Social Security taxes. The Social Security Administration determines the amount you must earn to receive one credit, and you can earn up to a maximum of four credits per year.
