Mrs. G would be eligible for COBRA starting June 1. She enrolled into COBRA coverage when her job ended in May. Mrs. G’s Medicare coverage was also set to begin June 1, and Mrs. G was not sure if she would be able to have both COBRA and Medicare.

What To Do:

Mrs. G called her State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). A counselor informed her that since she had elected her COBRA coverage before she became eligible for Medicare, she would not be able to keep her COBRA coverage. If she had waited to select COBRA until after she had become eligible for Medicare she would have been able to get COBRA to supplement her Medicare. (You have 60 days to select COBRA coverage after you become eligible.)
