Home modifications to continue living at home

Medicare does not cover home modifications or assistive devices, but there are programs that can help.

Medicare never covers home modifications, such as ramps or widened doors for improving wheelchair access. Though your doctor may suggest that home modifications may help due to your medical condition, Medicare does not include coverage for them under its durable medical equipment (DME) benefit. Medicare also does not cover assistive devices, such as large-button telephones or flashing doorbell signals.

If you need home modifications or assistive devices, there are organizations that can point you to low-cost products and services:

  • AbleData is a federally funded database of assistive technology Assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, or system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Medicare covers some assistive technology if medically necessary, such as speech generating devices. Simple items like grabbers and reachers are not covered by Medicare. products and rehabilitation equipment.
  • Each state has an Assistive Technology Program that helps residents with disabilities, their family members, and caregivers identify and get the equipment they need.
  • The National Rehabilitation Information Center offers information on organizations and agencies that can help people with disabilities.
  • AARP’s website has helpful home-design suggestions for people with disabilities.
