Supplemental insurance (or secondary coverage) pays after Medicare pays. It helps pay for medical expenses that Original Medicare does not pay for, such as such as coinsurance and deductibles. There are many different types of supplemental insurance, including Medigaps, retiree insurance, and income based programs. How supplemental insurance coordinates with Medicare depends on the plan.
